Grooming at home top tips!

Kennels

We know it’s tempting to get hold of the clippers for a DIY doggy cut, but if you’ve never done so before, think again!

Not only can it be unsafe, but we’re pretty sure your dog may not appreciate their new style (We all remember our own DIY haircuts!)

With lockdown, keeping your dog as well-groomed as possible has been hard. Luckily, we’ve caught up with our Head Groomer, Lauren to bring you some of our top home grooming tips!

Remember, whilst it’s important to keep dogs clean, you shouldn’t wash them too often as it can be bad for their skin.

Regular brushing

Regular brushing

Regular brushing and combing can really help keep matting at bay.

Lauren recommends getting yourself a slicker brush, as a number one for your home grooming kit! One without the ball bristles on the tips will allow you to brush through your dogs coat instead of just over it.

Always finish brushing your dog using a metal comb. If you can get a comb through the root of your dogs fur then you’re doing just fine!

Use Conditioner

Use Conditioner

Bathing can really help tease out small matts and remove dirt. A good conditioner will soften your dog’s coat leaving it more manageable.

A de-matting spray will also help condition and tease out the tangles! We use Wahl Detangler and find it works best when dogs are wet. You spray the areas which need attention and brush through before drying your dog.

Drying

Drying

After a gentle brush, its time to dry!

Avoid rubbing your dog down with a towel as this can cause matting to get worse. Instead we recommend “blotting” the dog, wrapping them in a towel and gently squeezing dry.

If your dog isn’t a fan of a brush or has a tendency to fidget, try a little and often approach with lots of praise and treats!

We hope these grooming tips come in handy at home and if you have any questions at all our groomers are here and ready to answer your questions!
