Great British Dog Walks: Wimbledon Common

Not just for Wombles, Wimbledon Common is a glorious doggy oasis in south-west London enjoyed by walkers, joggers and horse and bike riders alike.  Mixed terrains include grassland, woodland and sandy tracks, and with over 1,000 acres to explore, every walk can be different from the next. Here’s one of our favourites to get you started. If travelling by car, park at the bottom of Sunset Road (SW19 4UW) which is just off Camp Road, and then walk downhill along the gravel bridleway.  Turn right at Beverly Brook – a great place for dogs that like to swim, as the water flows slowly so is cleaner than a still pond but without the hazard of a strong current (except in winter months after heavy rain) – and follow the Brook down to the next bridge. You then have two options:

  1. Cross the brook and go over the A3 into Richmond Park.  The crossing is very safe with traffic lights and plenty of space to stand, although be sure to keep your dog on a lead as the A3 is a fast road.
  2. Or turn right at Beverly Brook and walk up the hill towards Queensmere Pond.  Once you arrive at the pond, walk around and turn right towards the Wimbledon Windmill Museum car park.

If you stay on the Wimbledon Common only walk, you will end up covering a triangular route of around three miles.  By which time you’ll have earned a snack at the Windmill Tea Rooms (SW19 5NQ) which is open 365 days a year 9am-5pm.  Dogs are not allowed inside but there is plenty of seating outside. Or you may prefer the nearby Hand in Hand pub (SW19 4RQ) which is super dog-friendly – dogs are welcome inside and out, including dining areas, and there are water bowls and doggy treats available. And once you are ready to return to your car, just follow the gravel bridleway south back to Sunset Road. Whatever route you take, Wimbledon Common is a great British dog walk in the sunshine or snow – enjoy!
